French fundraising

The children in years 5&6 have been working on their French Fayre Fundraiser for the afternoon of 23rd May. They have been putting together letters of invitiation (which you will recieve shortly), posters for their stalls and preparing the prizes and resources they will need to ensure the fundraising is a very successful afternoon. We look forward to sharing further details with you soon and look forward to seeing you all there on the day.

SATs week

So far the children in year 6 have done a superb job, they have concentrated really hard within their reading paper on Monday, the focus was mostly around animals. In addition to this, Josh has been completing his level 6 SATs papers too. Today the children sat their SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) test, they had a pop quiz from year 5 first thing in the morning and they were confident in all of the terminology that may have arisen in the paper. Again, Josh sat further tests throughout the day completeing the level 6 papers which included another spelling test and a short writing task. We are extremely proud of what they have achieved so far. Over the next few days they will sit their Mathematics papers, including mental maths and a new Paper B, which will no longer involve the use of a calculator. Josh will be sitting his level 6 papers in addition to the level 3-5 papers.

Science enquiry

Today in science we were learning how to classify items. We were given a range of pictures that we needed to separate into headings - we decided on our own headings. One group organised their pictures into solids, liquids and gases. Another group decided upon a Carroll Diagram using the Headings: Flammable, non-flammable, soft and hard. The final group split their pictures into man-made and natural. We had some really interesting discussions within our groups about where they should be placed, for example, tomatoes are natural, but the glass bottle is man-made, where should it go?

Childline

Today we travelled to Gaddesden Row for an assembly with their year 5&6's too. The assembly was about Childline, the number (08001111) and website (www.childline.org.uk)and we were introduced to Buddy, their mascot. We also learned about different types of abuse, such as emotional and physical. None of this is OK and Childline know that so if anything is worrying you, you can call Childline 24/7 because they are there to help and listen as well as being confidental and it's a free service.

Townsend Science and Transiton Workshop

Yesterday, we visited Townsend Secondary School in St Albans to take part in a science lesson. Our science lesson was based around sound and electricity, we used a slinky to hsee how travels through the air. We used a tuning fork and put it on our noses, we could feel the vibrations and it made our noses tickle! After our science lesson we moved on to a transition to secondary school lesson where we discussed our worries and concerns about going to a new and bigger school. We also completed school related activities which were about the timetable and how to find our way around. We feel a lot more confident in our move now.

Tennis

On Monday, Alison Wilkinson, our chair of governors, kindly allowed us to use her tennis court for Physical Education with Mr Bull, our sports coach. He showed us how to perform a forehand and a backhand. We finsihed our session by playing a game of king of the court. We are excited for what we will learn next.

Ukuleles

On Monday, with Ms Vineyard, we began learning how to play the ukulele, which is like a small guitar, but played differently. It has 4 strings and we have now learned how to play a 'c' and an 'a minor'.We were learning about different parts of the Ukulele such as the frets. We are looking forward to learning more over the term.
